Association between AA-NAT gene polymorphism and reproductive performance in sheep Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ding-ping,Bai; Cheng-jiang,Yu; Yu-lin,Chen.
Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) is critical enzyme in Melatonin (MLT) biosynthesis for MLT regulating the animal seasonal breeding. In this study, DNA sequencing methods were applied to detect the polymorphisms of the AA-NAT gene in 179 Chinese sheep belonging to two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and two seasonal reproduction breeds. One mutation at exon 3 (NM_001009461:c.486A > G) was firstly described at the sheep AA-NAT locus. Hence, we described the SmaI PCR-RFLP method for detecting EX3 486A > G mutation, frequencies of the AA-NAT-G allele varied from 0.871 to 0.908 in two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and 0.517 to 0.578 in two seasonal reproduction breeds. The associations of SmaI polymorphism with estrus...

Atividade reprodutiva de Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann) (Anura, Hylidae) na Floresta Atlântica, sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Bastos,Rogério P; Haddad,Célio F. B.
The breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964) was observed in a temporary pond, in the municipality of Ribeirão Branco, in the Southern São Paulo State from February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995. The reproductive season extended from September to February. Females were larger and heavier (after oviposition) than males. In the choras, the spatial distribution tended towards uniformity. The number of males and females in the chorus was positively correlated. However there was no correlation between the number of males and the estimation of the operational sex ratios. On average there were seven males for each female present in the chorus. The males were apparently selected by females.

Atrazine and nicosulfuron affect the reproductive fitness of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
REIS,TATIANE C.; SOARES,MARCUS A.; SANTOS,JOSÉ B. DOS; SANTOS,CONCEIÇÃO A. DOS; SERRÃO,JOSE EDUARDO; ZANUNCIO,JOSÉ C.; FERREIRA,EVANDER A..
Abstract Herbicides can impact non-target metabolic pathways in natural enemies and lead to the reduction of these populations in the field. Behavioral characteristics, morphology and histology of reproductive structures and reproduction of females of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were evaluated under the effect of the herbicides atrazine, nicosulfuron and the mixture of both. The number of mature oocytes per ovary was lower in females exposed to the herbicides atrazine, nicosulfuron and the mixture of both. Herbicides did not affect the longevity and mortality of P. nigrispinus, therefore, they are selective for this predator. On the other hand, herbicides can cause sublethal effects by affecting the reproduction of predators.

Autoecology of Dryadosaura nordestina (Squamata: Gymnophthalmidae) from Atlantic forest fragments in Northeastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Garda,Adrian A.; Medeiros,Pedro H.S. de; Lion,Marília B.; Brito,Marcos R.M. de; Vieira,Gustavo H.C.; Mesquita,Daniel O..
Life history parameters such as diet, reproduction, and sexual dimorphism are crucial to understand ecological and evolutionary forces shaping species traits. Nevertheless, such information is scant in the literature for most Neotropical squamates. Gymnophthalmidae contains over 242 species in 46 genera and includes small-size, mostly terrestrial species, although psamophilic, semi-aquatic, and low vegetation dwellers also occur. Dryadosaura is a monospecific genus - Dryadosaura nordestina Rodrigues et al., 2005 - , occurring in Atlantic Forest areas from Rio Grande do Norte to Northern Bahia, and little is known about its ecology and natural history. We analyzed the species' diet, reproduction, and sexual dimorphism based on 170 specimens deposited in...

Avancées récentes sur la reproduction des huîtres ArchiMer
Gerard, Andre.
Historically, the research on mollusc reproduction conducted by the Ifremer aimed at improving mass production in order to support new activities (Japanese clam for example) or to compensate for insufficient natural reproductions (abalone, king scallop). Nowadays, priority has been given to the preservation of natural resources and the optimisation of shellfish culture in order to support activities that are strongly represented by a profession, especially oyster culture. The studies that have been carried out in the field of oyster genetics for about ten years highlighted the limits of our knowledge on reproduction control as well as the high sensitivity of mollusc farms to the multiple assaults of their outside environment. As far as professional...

Bases biologiques de la production de deux Mollusques d'intérêt économique: reproduction chez Megathura crenulata, reproduction et développement chez Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Cannuel, Rozenn.
The reproductive cycle of Megathura crenulata was documented and quantification of oocyte lipid reserves with lipo-specific stains was explored in both this species and in Crassostrea gigas. The necessity of providing food to female broodstock C. gigas in spring was re-evaluated, because subsequent larval and post-larval rearing performance was not affected by broodstock starvation during conditioning. Developmental study of the organs responsible of particle processing in C. gigas allowed the identification of critical stages related to the ontogenesis of each organ, as well as a better understanding of the evolution of these organs, highly-modified in the Ostreidae. Ciliary type identification and mucocyte mapping from post-larval to adult stage showed...

Bioaccumulation of persistent organic pollutants in female common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from western European seas: Geographical trends, causal factors and effects on reproduction and mortality ArchiMer
Pierce, G; Santos, M; Murphy, S; Learmonth, J; Zuur, A; Rogan, E; Bustamante, Paco; Caurant, Florence; Lahaye, V; Ridoux, Vincent; Zegers, B; Mets, A; Addink, M; Smeenk, C; Jauniaux, T; Law, R; Dabin, W; Lopez, A; Farre, J; Gonzalez, A; Guerra, A; Garcia Hartmann, M; Reid, R; Moffat, C; Lockyer, C; Boon, J.
Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in blubber of female common dolphins and harbour porpoises from the Atlantic coast of Europe were frequently above the threshold at which effects on reproduction could be expected, in 40% and 47% of cases respectively. This rose to 74% for porpoises from the Southern North Sea. PCB concentrations were also high in southern North Sea fish. The average pregnancy rate recorded in porpoises (42%) in the study area was lower than in the western Atlantic but that in common dolphins (25%) was similar to that of the western Atlantic population. Porpoises that died from disease or parasitic infection had higher concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) than animals dying from other causes. Few of the...

Biofouling development and its effect on growth and reproduction of the farmed pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera ArchiMer
Lacoste, Elise; Le Moullac, Gilles; Levy, Peva; Gueguen, Yannick; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila.
In bivalve aquaculture, dominant fouling organisms are filter feeders which can compete for food with reared bivalves, sometimes causing mortality or reducing their growth rate. This study investigated the effect of biofouling on the farmed pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera in two lagoons of French Polynesia. Survival, growth and reproduction of 2 year-old pearl oysters were monitored with regular sampling schedules, from the initial stage of colonization up to 20 months of biofouling accumulation. Control groups of pearl oysters were kept free of biofouling as is the current practice in pearl farms. After more than a year of monitoring, no significant difference was recorded in shell growth rate between pearl oysters reared with epibionts and the...

Biología reproductiva del lenguado Paralichthys orbignyanus: Maduración y potencial reproductivo en ejemplares cultivados y salvajes OceanDocs
Radonic, M..
Intensive culture of teleost fish introduces changes over the environmental conditions found in their spawning grounds, leading to reproductive dysfunctions. The manipulation of these parameters (photoperiod, temperature) represents a common technique to alter the reproductive rhythms and enhance the spawnings in terms of quality and quantity. Nevertheless, for each species some modifications or adjustments have to be done according to their reproductive strategies. The advantages of manipulating those parameters are primarily to schedule the spawning for a desired period of time and to obtain good quality and quantity eggs. Many factors such as tank dimension, light intensity, nutritional status and husbandry of broodfish and minimum stress level have...

Biologia reprodutiva de Astyanax scabripinnis paranae (Eigenmann) (Ostheichthyes, Characidae), do ribeirão das Marrecas, bacia do rio Tibagi, Paraná Zoologia
Veregue,Angela Maria Louzada; Orsi,Mário Luís.
Some aspects of the reproductive cycle of female "lambari", Astyanax scabripinnis paranae (Eigenmann, 1927) were studied. The specimens were collected in intervals of fifteen days, from September 1979, until November 1980, in the Marrecas creek (Irerê and Paiquerê districts), Londrina, Paraná, Brazil. The maturity scale was characterized in five stages: immature, maturation, spawning, spent, and resting, which was established by the gonad-somatic relation and the ovary morphology and microscopic aspects. The maturation curve and distribution of maturity stages show that the period of reproduction is very long; spawning extended from July to March. The gonad cycle is related to seasons: maturation occurs chiefly in the winter months, spawning specimens are...

Biologia reprodutiva de Delomys dorsalis (Hensel, 1872) - Rodentia, Sigmodontinae - em área de floresta ombrófila mista, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Mastozool. neotrop.
Cademartori,Cristina V.; Fabián,Marta E.; Manegheti,João O..
Delomys dorsalis is restricted to the wet tropical and subtropical forests of southern and southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina . The reproductive cycle of this species was studied by the histological examination of the reproductive tracts of animals caught in an area of mixed forest with conifers (29º 23' S, 50º 23' W), in southern Brazil , and from observations on a laboratory group of individuals. Fourteen expeditions were carried out from February 1997 to April 1998, during approximately 3 nights, using 140 live traps set on the ground and on branches between 1.5 and 2.0 m high. Reproductively active individuals were observed year round, although winter was marked by a reduction in breeding activity resulting from recruitment. Females showed...
